Oded Be\u2019eri<\/em><\/strong> is Israel\u2019s great intellectual \u2013 film and theatre-director, author, novelist.<\/p>\n

Excerpts from this major documentary found recently in theatre-archives about his friend and colleague, (Professor) Hovhanness Israel Pilikian\u2019s Fat<\/em><\/strong> Hamlet is Be\u2019eri\u2019s masterpiece \u2013 a new genre of feature-documentary \u2013 sui generis<\/span><\/em>; impossible to categorize yet in film-history.<\/p>\n

It re-constructs conceptually<\/em>, virtually and visually a famous production (directed by Hovhanness I. Pilikian) a decade after its original premiere in London\u2019s West End<\/em> theatre-land over 2 decades ago (Produced by Emmanuel Gounalakis Management<\/em>), it places on global circulation the most innovative and definitive presentation of the world\u2019s most famous play, Shakespeare\u2019s Hamlet<\/em><\/strong>, proving Professor Pilikian\u2019s scholarly contention that Shakespeare himself intended his character of Hamlet to be hugely <\/strong><\/span>fat.<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

The first performer of the role, the most famous Elizabethan actor, Richard Burbage, was physically overweight.<\/em> And being<\/span><\/em> Fat, because of Henry VIII\u2019s bulk, was the Elizabethan high fashion<\/em><\/span>,<\/em><\/strong> not the anorexic slim-look, which is entirely<\/strong> modern and out of Shakespeare\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Shakespeare loved fat men<\/span>; Falstaff<\/em><\/strong> (also first enacted by Burbage) impersonates his reasons why \u2013 they are jolly, loyal, and sensual\/sexual, with presumed larger genitals, contrasted with Shakespeare\u2019s immense dislike of \u2018thin\u2019 men as exemplified by Julius Caesar\u2019s comment on \u201cYonder Cassius<\/em>\u201d, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek<\/em> (for example, in the Twelfth Night<\/strong>) \u2013 the name is a pun on \u2018diseased\/infected buttocks\u2019, in which form unfortunately Hamlet<\/em> is still frequently performed throughout Britain (including Lawrence Olivier\u2019s camp Hamlet<\/em>, in the film directed by him).<\/p>\n

Hopefully, the upload of Oded Be\u2019eri\u2019s masterpiece (even in bits) onto the Internet<\/em> shall finally put \u2018thin Hamlets\u2019 to bed, and open up new unpredictably radical and revolutionary paths and avenues in Shakespeare Studies<\/em> all over the world, transforming and transmuting the world\u2019s most famous play into pure intellectual Pilikian-gold.<\/p>\n

Be\u2019eri\u2019s feature also boasts the exclusive and only<\/span> tele-visual appearance of two great intellectuals of the British theatre, Irving Wardle<\/em><\/strong>, the number one theatre-critic for many decades of the London Times, <\/em>and the late Hugh Cruttwell<\/em><\/strong>, the most prominent Principal of the Royal Academy of the Dramatic Art<\/em> (abbreviated as the world-famous RADA), married to the late Geraldine McEwan, a superstar of the British theatre.<\/p>\n

It remains to add the epoch-making performances by Steve Varnom as Hamlet<\/em>, and Janet Crawford as Gertrude<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Professor Hovhanness I. Pilikian\u2019s work (in many fields of knowledge) is frequently \u201cprophetic\u201d, as illustrated here, predicting 30 years ago<\/span><\/em> the total socio-political corruption of today\u2019s societies shaken by the British MP\u2019s expenses scandal robbing their citizenry, Banks stealing their savers\u2019 accounts through 0% interest rates, Libor<\/em> manipulation etc., paedophile child-rape and murder by prominent public figures etc. etc.<\/p>\n
