21 February 2019

Seventy-five years ago the below heart-wrenching letter was written by Missak Manouchian (1906 – 1944) to his wife Mélinée a few hours before he and his resistance comrades were executed by a Nazi squad at Mont-Valérien, west of Paris, on 21st February 1944. A witness to the Armenian Genocide, he was a survivor, he was committed to fighting evil and improving the lot of people everywhere. In his letter he wrote, “At the moment of death, I proclaim that I have no hatred against the German people and against anyone, everyone will have what they deserve as punishment and reward.”

Manouchian was a blue-collar worker (he worked in a car factory), but he was attracted to the arts and culture and he was a poet. In early ’30s he published the literary monthly magazine «Ջանք» (Endeavour) and later the „Zankou“ weekly. His poems were posthumously published in 1946. He is considered a hero of the French Resistance and was honoured as a „Fighter, Worker, Poet“.
