God, The Free (Song of Freedom)

Poem by Mikael Nalbandian (b. New Nakhichevan in Crimea, 1829, d. Camishin in Saratov, 1866.)

 Music by Tigran Tchukhadjian (b. Constantinople, 1837, d. Smyrna, 1898.)

 Rendered into English, titled as LIBERTY, by the great artist, writer and translator, Zabelle Boyajian  (b, Diarbekir, 1872, d. London, 1957), the first woman artist exhibiting her one-woman show in London; the author of the first epic poem/ play, in the English language, of the Sumerian epic, Gilgamesh, 1926.

 When the God of Liberty 

Formed of earth this mortal frame,

Breathed the breath of life in me,

And a spirit I became,

 

Wrapped within my swaddling bands,

Bound and fettered helplessly, *

I stretched forth my infant hands 

To embrace sweet Liberty.

 

 All night long, until the dawn,

In my cradle bound I lay;

And my sobbing’s ceaseless moan

Drove my mother’s sleep away.

 

As I begged her, weeping loud,

To unbind and set me free;

From that very day I vowed

I would love thee, Liberty!

 

 *Armenian babies are tied tightly into their cradles when they are put to sleep.

Ազատն Աստուած այն օրից,

 

Երբ հաճեցաւ շունչ փչել,
Իմ հողանիւթ շինուածքին
Կենդանութիւն պարգեւել,
Ես անբարբառ մի մանուկ՝
Երկու ձեռքս պարզեցի
Եւ իմ անզօր թեւերով
Ազատութիւն գրկեցի:

Մինչ գիշերը, անհանգիստ,
Օրօրոցում կապկապած,
Լալիս էի անդադար
Մօրս քունը խանգարած,
Խնդրում էի նորանից
Բազուկներս արձակել,
Ես այն օրից ուխտեցի՝
Ազատութիւնը սիրել:

Թոթով լեզուիս մինչ կապերը
Արձակուեցան, բացուեցան,
Մինչ ծնողքս իմ ձայնից
Խնդացին ու բերկրացան,
Նախկին խօսքն որ ասեցի՝
Չէր հայր, կամ մայր, կամ այլ ինչ՝
Ազատութի՜ւն, դուրս թռաւ
Իմ մանկական բերանից:

«Ազատութի՞ւն», ինձ կրկնեց
Ճակատագիրն վերեւից.
«Ազատութեա՞ն դու զինուոր
Կամիս գրուիլ այս օրից:
Ո՜հ փշոտ է ճանապարհդ.
Քեզ շատ փորձանք կը սպասէ.
Ազատութիւն սիրողին
Այս աշխարհը խիստ նեղ է»:

-Ազատութի՜ւն,- գոցեցի,-
Թող որոտայ իմ գլխին
Փայլակ, կայծակ, հուր, երկաթ,
Թող դաւ դնէ թշնամին,
Ես մինչ ի մահ, կախաղան,
Մինչեւ անարգ մահու սիւն
Պիտի գոռամ, պիտ կրկնեմ
Անդադար՝ Ազատութի՜ւն:
